Ethnomathematics, complementarity and Bhutan

This presentation to the annual meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics describes ethnomathematical research conducted in Bhutan from 1986-1988. Results showed that teaching mathematics to elementary students through games, songs, and play is an actualization of the principle of complementarity. Many of the cultural activities of the Bhutanese people involve ethnomathematical practices. Other terms: UNICEF, GOBI project, pedagogy, theory, developing country, propositional theme.

This website contains the text of a presentation on the music of the Aka Pygmies of central Africa. Specifically, the author analyzes certain asymmetrical rythmic structures appearing in the music of this culture. Complex mathematical patterns have been carefully woven into this music. Since these patterns are imperceptible to the listener, the author concludes that they must have been incorporated into the music as a result of mathematical rather than esthetic concerns. Some notes and legends of a south sea island

This report about the Tokelau Group (atolls roughly midway between New Zealand and Hawaii) includes a description of the twelve-point Tokelau compass and the calendar. People have named the winds that blow from the 12 directions (points) on the compass. It is noted that the compass’ “four cardinal points are as usual, but two points occur between each pair of cardinal points.” A list provides the indigenous words for the twelve points. Another list provides the twelve months of the Tokelau calendar with indigenous terminology and concepts that revolve around the appearances of a few species of fish, the commencement of various directional winds, the presence of birds, and the breeding of turtles.
